Staff spotlight: Martha Walker

In honor of National Healthcare Environmental Services and Housekeeping Week, September 9-15, we would like to take a moment to shine the spotlight on Martha Walker, who in December will be celebrating 10 years as a member of the community’s housekeeping team.

Working primarily on the night shift, Martha is responsible for the community’s laundry and ensuring that everything is clean and ready to go for residents when they start their day the following morning.

While some might find the night shift lonely, Martha enjoys the solitude.

“It’s quieter, you’re by yourself and not much commotion goes on,” said Martha.

Prior to joining the community, Martha spent eight years as the head housekeeper at a motel and 16 years working in a factory, however she says that she has enjoyed her time at Farmington Presbyterian Manor the most.

I enjoy working there. It’s one of the nicest places I’ve worked,” said Martha. “Plus, I just like helping people.”

Interacting with the community’s residents is another part of the job Martha enjoys.

“I have one resident who enjoys folding bibs, so I take them to her,” said Martha. “She gets a kick out of it, and it keeps her occupied. She says it gives her something to do.”

Away from the community, Martha enjoys going to flea markets, antiquing and fishing. But most of all, she likes spending time with her family which includes her husband of 48 years, Tony, her four children, numerous grandchildren and one great grandchild.
