Learning never stops for Macey Nicholson

Macey Nicholson joined the staff of Farmington Presbyterian Manor in August of 2011 as a graduate practical nurse. Since then, she has continued her education and moved up the ranks.

“When I started here, I worked every weekend on the night shift. I’ve worked in the memory care [neighborhood], and I’ve floated around to different spots in the building. I like being on the floor, being the eyes and ears,” said Macey.

After graduating in May 2012 from registered nursing school, Macey took a supervising position for the night shift. Working nights offers flexibility for this working mom.

“My kids are in school now so it’s easier to work nights and be home with my kids during the day. [Presbyterian] Manor is flexible and works hard to keep us where we want to be, too.”

What’s next? Macey plans to start working on her bachelors of nursing (BSN) degree through Central Methodist University. “It’s an online program several others have gone through. It’s more flexible than regular nursing school. It won’t necessarily change anything, but I don’t necessarily want it to. I’m there because I want to be.”

While Macey has continued her education through various educational programs, she also has learned a lot from her fellow colleagues.

“I was not a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) but I’ve learned from the girls I’ve worked with. People think if you’re a registered nurse you can do it all. You can, but you need to know the role of a CNA. I’ve learned a lot from the staff here and they’re great!”

In addition to the staff, Macey also enjoys the environment at Presbyterian Manor. “It’s so easy and so natural. I never say, ‘I don’t want to go to work.’ I’m comfortable here. I could never imagine going anywhere else.”

When Macey isn’t hitting the books or working the floor, you’ll find her spending time with her fiancé, three step-children and five-year-old.
